![]() ![]() ![]() Today I was told my steering rack is leaking (no fluid under the car) and my reservoir is at the top line. At that time I was well within the warranty period of the 7 yrs. I had the pump checked out on the recall when I received the letter around July of 2011. Honda had extended the warranty out to 7 years and 100,000 miles. I have 86,000 miles and the car has been in service 8 years and 3 months. Hard to steer in tight spaces or from a stop. I was just in to the dealer today with my '05 Odyssey Touring. rebuilt racks are cheaper $200 and usually carry a better warranty The seal on the outside is for external leaks, replacing it mostly does not fix for very long as the shaft is worn or damaged in the seal area, also there is a bushing in the body that wears allowing the shaft to move too much causing leaksĪ quick shows the honda rack at around $600, 6hrs, fluid. This type of seal is only repairable by replacing with new rack or rebuild. The dealer may be refering to and internal seal leak (on the ram piston), what they may be trying to describe is there is a piston that seals to the rack body, when sealing proper pressure on one side is applied and "power assist" is applied via fluid to ease strg, if the seal (usually o-rings) are leaking or bypassing fluid the the amount of assist is lestened and there will be no fluid loss. If not loosing fluid and hard to steer, assuming the pump is good?. So understanding that for a few weeks you have not been loosing fluid ?, are the hard strg symtoms still there ? Going forward I will be watching the fluid everyday, in mean time I called dealership to find out where exactly fluid is leaking and according to therm mechanic was off today who has checked my van, hooping to get an answer tomorrow. Also I marked the reservoir and fluid did not drop in level.Ĥ.) Area is dry around power steering pump. Today I drove another 20 miles in 18 degree here in MI and still did not see any leak. ![]() I filled up the reservoir to full level and started and stop the engine many times and bubble did not happen.Ģ.) As I bought this van around 2000 miles ago and during this time period I did not see any level drop in fluid reservoir.ģ.)I looked under the car and did not see anything. Also notice that one time when I turned off the engine reservoir got full of bubble. If the rack is leaking, it is probably a pain to remove (they all are), but I would think an independent shop could do this for half the price the dealer is charging.ġ.) I can see really tiny bubbles even if when engine is running (oil level between low and full), I notice that after I drove about 10 miles from dealership. I can't imagine it would be 1/2 hour shop labor rate to replace.Ī quick check shows that remanufactured rack and pinion steering gears are about $300 with a 3 year 36K mile warranty. The oring is about $1 and the elbow can be removed with an allen wrench (little messy as you have tto drain the reservoir). If it is full of bubbles and foamy, you might have a leak on the suction hose, or the o-ring where the 45 degree elbow attaches the suction line to the power steering pump. Meanwhile have an assistant slowly turn the wheel from side to side and look at the fluid with the cap removed from the reservoir. If your fluid level doesn't drop, you probably don't have enough of a leak to warrant a steering rack replacement. Check back under the same conditions a week later. Prior to starting take a sharpie and mark the level on the outside of the reservoir. I would verify that it is indeed losing fluid. ![]()
